We were talking with a friend the other day who just happens to have a last name that starts with a letter that occurs very late in the alphabet. She was complaining that her entire life she’s had to be last “even when it comes to jobs. I bet I get shafted because by the time employers get to my letter they’ve already gotten tired or found somebody that’s fine.”

Damn good point.

When reviewing applications for employees, hiring managers commonly start from the beginning and look in alphabetical order. This unfairly weighs the results. But while it’s easy to see it as unfair to the applicant it’s also unfair to the employer and getting the best possible person.

So, it’s simple. Start in the middle, at like “M”. Or shuffle them up altogether.
